HARLAN PLAZA
DANVILLE, KENTUCKY
SAW collaborated with Centre College to design a monument honoring the life and legacy of John Marshall Harlan, a Centre alumnus and former Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Known as the “Great Dissenter,” Harlan earned this title for his dissenting opinions in landmark cases that curtailed civil liberties, such as Plessy v. Ferguson. His dissents provided a foundational framework for the future Civil Rights Movement. Throughout the design process, SAW engaged in numerous stakeholder meetings with campus administration, donors, facilities management, and other key contributors. The final design includes an outdoor classroom, aligning with Centre College’s goals of campus beautification, fostering community, and sharing the story of Justice Harlan. SAW also collaborated closely with renowned African American sculptor Ed Hamilton to ensure the plaza’s design harmonized with the Harlan sculpture. SAW worked closely with Centre College and local contractors to develop a design that was both aesthetically striking and functional, while ensuring it stayed within budget.
